An abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. It’s also sometimes known as a termination of pregnancy.

The pregnancy is ended either by taking medicines or having a surgical procedure. More information about abortions can be found on the NHS website.

How to get an abortion

Abortions can only be carried out under the care of an NHS hospital or a licensed clinic, and are usually available free of charge on the NHS.

If you’re less than 10 weeks pregnant you may be able to have a medical abortion at home after an initial appointment with the hospital or clinic.

Locally, there are three providers you can contact for abortion services (listed below). These providers can both provide advice about your options and deliver the service if you decide an abortion is the right decision for you. You do not need a GP referral, however, the team at the practice would be happy to talk with and offer support to anyone considering an abortion, if it might help.
